You must know how to swim and feel comfortable in the ocean before participating in a scuba diving experience with Aloha Maui Diving. You do not need to be a competitive or advanced swimmer. Basic swimming ability and a reasonable level of comfort in open water are sufficient for many beginner scuba experiences.
Scuba diving requires participants to become fully submerged in the ocean. Being comfortable in the water is essential for your safety, confidence and enjoyment. A person who is nervous in open water may find it more difficult to relax, breathe normally and focus on the instructor’s directions.
Scuba equipment allows you to breathe underwater, but it is not a replacement for basic swimming ability. You still need to enter and exit the ocean, move with your fins, maintain control of your body and remain calm if water enters your mask or regulator. These basic abilities help you complete the required scuba skills and participate safely in the guided reef dive.
Aloha Maui Diving requires every participant to be able to swim before joining a scuba diving experience. This policy helps provide a safer and more enjoyable environment for the diver, the instructor and the rest of the group. Be honest about your swimming ability and level of water comfort when booking your experience.
Previous snorkeling experience is strongly recommended for beginner scuba divers. Snorkeling helps you become accustomed to placing your face in the water, breathing through a mouthpiece and moving with fins. It also gives you an opportunity to develop greater confidence in the ocean before becoming fully submerged with scuba equipment.
If you cannot currently swim, begin with swimming lessons in a controlled pool. Once you develop basic skills and confidence, gradually progress to supervised snorkeling in appropriate ocean conditions. Taking the time to build these abilities can greatly improve the comfort and quality of your future scuba experience.
A guided snorkeling experience can help bridge the gap between pool swimming and scuba diving. Eco Sea Scooter Snorkeling Academy is one Maui option for developing greater comfort in the ocean before attempting scuba. Practicing in stages allows you to build confidence without rushing into an experience for which you are not yet prepared.
Learning to swim first is worth the effort. Greater water comfort will help you listen to your instructor, control your breathing and enjoy Maui’s underwater environment. Contact Aloha Maui Diving if you have questions about whether your current swimming ability is appropriate for a beginner scuba experience.
