Can You Scuba Dive in Maui Without Being Certified?

You do not need to be certified to try scuba diving in Maui. A Discover Scuba Diving experience allows beginners to explore Maui’s underwater environment under the direct supervision of a professional scuba instructor. This introductory program is a great choice for visitors who want to experience scuba diving without completing a full certification course during their vacation.

No previous scuba diving experience is required, but participants must be comfortable swimming in open water. Previous snorkeling experience is strongly recommended because it can make adjusting to breathing and moving underwater easier. Discover Scuba Diving participants must also be at least 10 years old and physically capable of carrying approximately 40 pounds of equipment into and out of the ocean.

Before the experience, every participant must complete the required waivers and medical questionnaire. Certain medical answers may require written clearance from a physician before the person is allowed to dive. Completing this paperwork early provides enough time to obtain medical clearance if it is needed.

Aloha Maui Diving provides the necessary scuba equipment and handles its setup and breakdown. Your experience begins with a detailed 45- to 60-minute briefing covering basic diving concepts, equipment use, safety procedures and respectful interaction with Maui’s marine environment. A short ten-question quiz is given afterward to review the information presented during the briefing.

Your instructor then helps you enter shallow water, where you will practice four essential scuba skills. These exercises help you become comfortable breathing through the equipment and prepare you to respond to common situations underwater. Every participant must successfully complete the skills before continuing to the guided reef portion of the experience.

Once the skills are complete, your instructor guides you across Maui’s shallow coral reefs while maintaining direct supervision. You may encounter colorful reef fish, green sea turtles, moray eels, octopuses, eagle rays and other marine life. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but Maui’s reefs support an incredible variety of underwater residents.

Beginner groups with Aloha Maui Diving are limited to a maximum of four divers per instructor. This allows the instructor to monitor each diver’s comfort, position and air supply closely throughout the experience. Your instructor remains with the group and guides everyone safely back to shore when the dive is complete.

After scuba diving, participants must remain below 1,000 feet in elevation for 18 hours. This restriction includes airplane and helicopter flights, Mount Haleakalā, high-elevation hikes, ziplining, paragliding and visits to certain upcountry areas. Contact Aloha Maui Diving before planning an activity if you are uncertain about its elevation.

Beginner divers and their instructors are not permitted to operate underwater cameras during the experience. This policy keeps everyone focused on diver safety instead of photography. Aloha Maui Diving can help arrange for a separate dive professional to capture underwater photographs or video.

Discover Scuba Diving is not a scuba certification, but it provides a safe and professionally supervised introduction to the sport. If you enjoy your first experience, you can repeat the beginner dive or take the next step toward earning your scuba certification. Contact Aloha Maui Diving to learn how you can experience scuba diving during your Maui vacation.
