Is Scuba Diving in Maui Safe for Beginners?

Maui can provide excellent conditions for beginner scuba divers when the dive is conducted at a carefully selected site under direct professional supervision. Aloha Maui Diving’s introductory experiences take place along the protected leeward side of Maui Nui. The surrounding islands of Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Kahoʻolawe help shelter many of these sites from larger waves and stronger currents.

The specific dive site is selected according to the safest suitable ocean conditions available that day. Maui’s water is often warm and clear, with temperatures sometimes reaching the low 80s. Depending on the conditions, horizontal visibility may range from approximately 40 to 100 feet.

Every Discover Scuba Diving participant receives a thorough safety briefing before entering the ocean. The briefing covers equipment use, basic diving principles, underwater communication and important safety procedures. Equipment checks are also completed before the group enters the water.

Once in shallow water, participants must successfully complete four essential scuba skills before beginning the guided reef tour. These exercises help divers become comfortable breathing through their equipment and prepare them to respond to common underwater situations. Beginner divers remain under direct instructor supervision throughout the experience.

Aloha Maui Diving limits beginner groups to a maximum of four divers per instructor. This allows the instructor to closely monitor each person’s position, comfort and air supply. Although Discover Scuba Diving standards permit a maximum depth of 40 feet, most first dives with Aloha Maui Diving average approximately 15 to 20 feet.

Every participant must complete the medical questionnaire included with the required waivers. Certain medical answers may require written clearance from a physician before the participant is allowed to dive. Divers must also be able to swim comfortably in the ocean and carry approximately 40 pounds of scuba equipment into and out of the water.

Aloha Maui Diving’s instructional staff members hold professional credentials along with first aid, CPR and oxygen-provider certifications. Strict safety procedures are followed to support the comfort and enjoyment of every participant. Instructors also use their experience reading Maui’s ocean conditions to determine whether a beginner dive can proceed safely.

The ocean can never be guaranteed to remain perfectly predictable. In the rare event that conditions are unsuitable for a Discover Scuba Diving experience, scheduled divers are contacted as soon as possible and offered an opportunity to reschedule or receive a refund. Safety is prioritized over completing a dive in unfavorable conditions.

You do not need an existing scuba certification to try diving in Maui. Discover Scuba Diving provides a professionally supervised introduction to the sport before you decide whether to pursue full certification. Contact Aloha Maui Diving to discuss your swimming ability, medical requirements and what to expect during your first Maui scuba diving experience.
