A Discover Scuba Diving experience for beginners takes a maximum of approximately two and a half hours with Aloha Maui Diving. This time includes the land-based instruction, equipment preparation, shallow-water skill practice and guided reef dive. Plan to reserve the entire two and a half hours so you can learn at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed.
The experience begins with a detailed land briefing conducted by a professional PADI instructor. This portion generally lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. Your instructor explains the scuba equipment, basic diving principles, underwater communication, essential safety procedures and what to expect after entering the ocean.
After the briefing, your instructor helps you prepare your equipment and conducts a complete gear check. The group then takes a short walk to the water and enters the ocean together. Following your instructor’s directions during the entry is especially important because moving through the surf while wearing scuba equipment may feel unfamiliar.
The next 10 to 20 minutes are generally spent practicing in shallow water. You will become comfortable breathing through your regulator and complete four required scuba skills that were explained during the land briefing. Every participant must demonstrate the skills successfully before the group can continue to the guided reef tour.
Once the skills are complete, your instructor guides you gradually across Maui’s coral reefs. The instructor remains with the group, points out marine life, monitors everyone’s comfort and air supply, and prioritizes each participant’s safety. Depending on the conditions, you may encounter colorful reef fish, green sea turtles, moray eels, octopuses, eagle rays and other marine animals.
The dive ends when a participant reaches the planned air-pressure limit or when the group has spent a maximum of 60 minutes in the water. Your instructor then guides everyone safely back to shore and returns with the group to the dive vehicle. The exact amount of underwater time varies according to the participants, their air consumption and the ocean conditions.
After removing your equipment, your instructor helps you log the details of your dive. This may include the dive time, maximum depth, equipment setup and marine life you encountered. Logging the experience gives you a record of your first dive and useful information for future scuba adventures.
If you booked a second dive, your instructor will replace your tank with a full one. The group can return to the ocean after a short surface break for water or a snack. Contact Aloha Maui Diving when booking if you are interested in adding another dive to your beginner scuba experience.
